A partir da próxima segunda-feira, 23 de novembro, o Pavilhão Japonês estará fechado para obras de restauro com previsão de término e reabertura para visitas somente no início do próximo ano, no dia 06 de janeiro.
O último dia em que estará aberto ao público será neste domingo, dia 22/11. Quem quiser visitar o espaço ainda este ano aproveite para visitar neste fim de semana.
A restauração do Pavilhão Japonês é um dos projetos oficiais em comemoração aos 120 Anos do Tratado de Amizade Brasil-Japão, que contou inclusive com a visita oficial do Principe Akishino e da Princesa Kiko do Japão no último dia 28 junto a autoridades locais para cerimônia oficial.
Construído pelo governo japonês em conjunto com a comunidade nipo-brasileiro, o Pavilhão simboliza a amizade e o intercâmbio entre japoneses e brasileiros e foi doado à cidade de São Paulo em 1954, na comemoração do IV Centenário de sua fundação. Além dele, existe somente um similar, fora do Japão, nos Estados Unidos, a manter suas características originais em perfeito estado de conservação.
Para manter as características originais do Pavilhão, além da mão de obra especializada, serão utilizadas madeiras de duas espécies de ciprestes nativos do Japão: o sugi para a restauração do telhado afetado pela ação de cupins, e o hinoki nas estruturas das bases dos pilares que estão desgastadas pelo clima brasileiro e pelo tempo.
As madeiras já estão armazenadas no próprio Pavilhão após 38 dias de viagem de navio vindo do Porto de Nagoya, Japão. Foram quase 6 toneladas de materiais e ferramentas e o transporte para o Parque Ibirapuera efetuado com 3 caminhões.
